Responsible Consumption

Responsible consumption requires minimizing our impact on the environment by preventing excessive use of energy, products and services, thereby passing resources on to future generations. While the insensible consumption of resources damages the ecosystem to a destructive extent, our routine consumption practices stand out as one of the main culprits of the climate crisis. Globally, millions of consumer products turn into tons of waste every day, even before they go on the shelf. According to the United Nations, about one-third of all food produced annually rots during the storage of consumers and retailers or simply spoils due to poor shipping and harvesting practices. Therefore, it’s ever more important to revisit consumption practices on a global scale, do more and better with less for a sustainable life.

At Yapı Kredi, we measure and report the greenhouse gas emissions arising from our operations annually in accordance with the ISO 14064 standard. We never use disposable plastics in any of our locations, and start changing from ground zero. Our efforts for reducing plastic use are not limited to our internal practices, also we never produce promotional materials such as plastic piggy banks and pens. Besides, we use recycling bins instead of trash cans.

We are aware of the great responsibility to correctly manage the impact of our operations on the environment and society. We consistently increase our contribution to energy efficiency, renewable energy and other low-carbon energy sources with our products and services.

In line with the responsibility for accelerating the transition from high-carbon to low-carbon energy sources, we support green energy with our “Sustainable Branch” project, implemented in collaboration with Yapı Kredi Leasing and Arçelik. We proudly established our first sustainable branch in December 2021 by installing rooftop solar panels at Yapı Kredi Bodrum Branch. In addition to covering the on-site electricity consumption of Bodrum branch from renewable resources, we also cover the energy needs of the electric vehicle allocated to this branch likewise, through the electric vehicle charging station located at the parking lot. We are determined to continue this solar transformation process at other physically-eligible branches and premises in the upcoming days.

By exhibiting responsible behavior with World, our leading credit card brand in the country, we invite consumers to do lean and smart shopping instead of encouraging them to spend more. Minding the future of our planet, we believe that the notion of consumption should be approached in a much “smarter” way. We have adopted the “smart shopping” concept to stand against the consumption frenzy, which is entirely the opposite of sustainability. With our Simple as the World series, we encourage everyone to reconsider their consumption habits, be it mental, physical or any other kind. We explain to consumers that smart consumption will benefit them, the environment and the economy, and we invite them to be mindful in their purchasing behaviors.
