Initiated in September 2003 in collaboration with TEMA and contributions from the Faculty of Agriculture of Harran University, the Saffron Project was completed in November 2006. The project's primary goals are to protect saffron's gene resources and to re-popularize saffron agriculture in Turkey. After a 3-year period, during which saffron bulbs grew in number, and new techniques to raise them were introduced, saffron agriculture attracted a great deal of media attention. At the project's completion in December 2007, a book called “Saffron Flowers in Harran” was published to disseminate the information gathered on saffron agriculture.

According to a survey conducted by GFK Turkey in 2007, the Saffron Project is among the five most recognized environmental projects in Turkey, and has won various national and international awards. Among these awards are: the first prize in Golden World Awards held by IPRA (2004), United Nations Honorary Award, (2004) Active Academy Corporate Social Responsibility Award (2004), Heading to Summit-the Sparkling Project of Turkey in Social Responsibility Award of the magazine Platin(2005).
