Lectures on Evliya Çelebi “The Geography of the Turkish Language in the Balkans according to Evliya Çelebi”

Evliya Çelebi travelled extensively through the Ottoman Empire and neighbouring countries during his lifetime and created the classic work named Seyahatnâme which consists of ten volumes and recounts all that he witnessed and experienced. Yapı Kredi Publications has recently completed a mammoth project and produced a new edition of the Seyahatnâme by working on the original hand written parchment texts. It took a group of scientists eleven years (1996 – 2007) to complete this new edition. Yapı Kredi Publications is therefore proud to present this reliable reference source in its latest format, first time after the original edition which had taken experts forty to complete over a century ago.
The geographical boundaries of the Ottoman Empire included lands in Asia, Europe and Africa and their political superiority in these regions made them supreme rulers of the Black Sea, Aegean and Mediterranean regions. The historical developments of these regions have greatly affected the many nations of a variety of sizes that have since been established on these lands, creating the geographical and political realities of today. This grand work by Evliya Çelebi, known as the Seyahatnâme is an inestimably significant firsthand account of the social developments that have shaped these regions.
During the month of November, Sermer Çifter Hall will be hosting experts on the subject every Tuesday who will be lecturing for those who would like to know more about this giant volume of works.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SPEECH

“Prehistoric Istanbul: The known, the unknown, the expected”

Bekir Köşker

Despite its importance as an integral part of the history of civilization, Istanbul is, historically, one of the least researched cities. Istanbul has been a strategic key point throughout history as a location which has played a strategic role in exchanging and spreading different cultures, due to its geographical location. The city has the unique position of being located at the meeting point of the Balkans and the Near East, as well as sitting along the narrow straits that connect the Black Sea cultural region to the Aegean – Mediterranean seas. The abundance of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman monuments and textures that cover the city have prevented the residents of Istanbul from being able to perceive the depths of its historical past beyond a historically minute time frame of 2700 years based on Megara colony legends. This status quo was first altered by the findings made at the excavations carried out in Yenikapı which excited contemporary residents with artefacts that date as far back as 5000 years. Yet, the existence of Fikirtepe and Yarımburgaz cultures, the findings are attributed to, have been known to have existed for many years. This lecture will emphasize the importance of these older findings as items that help explain the formation of the concept of an urban identity for Istanbulites.

Mehmet H Doğan, who was one of the most prominent critics of Turkish poetry, also left behind an immense legacy by mapping out the Turkish poetry of the last hundred years in immense detail in a highly valued book named “Turkish Poetry of the Century”. He also contributed to the literary world of Turkey by translating numerous critiques, memoires and art theory books. Fethi Naci, who was inspired by Marxism much like Mehmet H. Doğan, entered the literary world by writing poems and stories and continued his artistic journey by concentrating on writing and translating articles and books on aesthetics, he broadened the horizons of the younger generations by establishing a publishing company named Gerçek Yayınevi which printed a series of “In a hundred Questions” books. Starting with his novel “İnsan Tükenmez” in 1959, he wrote a large number of works until his final work produced in 1999 named “10 Türk Romanı” (A 100 Turkish Novels).
