The Garden within the child

“The Garden Within the child”, first published in 1982, is the only novel of Feyyaz Kayacan (1919-1993), though he was one of the most famous names in Turkish story writing during the period after Sait Faik, known as “The story version of the New Second Period”.

The following statement made by Selim İleri about the stories of Kayacan are valid for “The Garden within the Child” as well:
“The first words that come to mind when asked to sum up the stories of Feyyaz Kayacan are; ironic as well as poetic, yet an almost dustily old love of melancholy, which bubbles from within with an adventurous sense of innovativeness....”

On the other hand, Feyyaz Karacan described his own novel as: “The Garden within the Child” as a dual sided work which has a side that is reminiscent of Kafka and another that reflects ancient comics. These two different elements change places and have an altering affect on each other throughout the book.”

Case Histories

Case Histories is a crime novel which details developments in three apparently disparate cases, including two murders and a missing person, that had previously been investigated and closed as unsolved cases. Despite their diversity these cases appear to be connected on many levels upon closer examination.
The first case is about Olivia’s family, who disappeared without a trace at the age of three.  Her two older sisters, Julia and Amelia, decide to hire a private detective following the death of their father, thirty four years after the disappearance of Olivia, to find out the truth behind their younger sister’s mysterious case. The second story revolved around lawyer Theo Wyre and the brutal murder of his much loved daughter Laura, ten years ago. It appears at first that Laura had no known enemies and was a very ordinary girl who had just graduated from high school and had started to work at her father’s law firm. The third case is about a murder where the murderer and the victim have supposedly been identified.  Kate, at the young age of 18 had murdered her husband, as the result of a nervous breakdown, with an axe. Their baby, who was only a few months old at the time had also disappeared after the murder.
